Penhaligon's Portraits The Tragedy of Lord George, composed by Alberto Morillas, opens with a clean, soapy shaving-salon accord softened by a faint, non-boozy rum flicker, then develops an ambretteh-warmed heart before settling into a base of precious woods, amber, tonka bean and a bittersweet myrrh. The overall character is stately and quietly melancholic — 'properly British' with a hint of danger, evoking an old-fashioned gentleman's dressing room. It's an oriental fougère suited to autumn and winter, with the tonka-myrrh dry-down giving it good longevity and a refined, mature sillage rather than a loud one. Lord George suits anyone drawn to soapy-woody fougères with an elegant, slightly melancholic edge rather than a straightforwardly fresh or sweet profile.
